Goddard Space Flight Center
Facilities Master Plan
FAQ

Question:  What is a Facilities Master Plan?
Answer:  A facilities master plan is a 20-year look ahead at Goddard‚s buildings, roadways, fences, and land use. In order to continue to be efficient and effective in carrying out Goddard‚s scientific research, changes to GSFC's environment (buildings, roadways, land use) are necessary. GSFC's last master plan, prepared in 1988, is out of step compared to the Center's 21st Century needs.

Question:   Why is a Facilities Master Plan important for GSFC?
Answer:  The new master plan will enable GSFC to compete for and win challenging work, attract a highly skilled workforce and provide an up-to-date workplace to carry out its critical research and ensure mission success.

Question:   What goals does the Master Plan help GSFC achieve?
Answer:
The proposed Master Plan changes will help Goddard achieve it's goals:

  • Safety - Avoid unnecessary risk to people and mission.
  • Quality - Ensure that facilities are the best fit for activities.
  • Efficiency - Use buildings and services to the fullest.
  • Unified Campus - Enable workforce to work more effectively.
  • Partners - Enable GSFC to work closely with our partners.

Question:   What does the Master Plan propose?
Answer:  Addressing the West Campus/East Campus separation is a major reason for the changes proposed in Goddard‚s master plan. GSFC proposed joining these separate campuses. Land along the current path of Soil Conservation Service Road, will be used for key mission and support activities.

Question:  Who are the Stakeholders?
Answer:

  • The community including state, regional, and local governments, as well as community organizationas and individuals affected by our actions.
  • Mission customers including NASA, the sciency community that benefits from our work.
  • The workforce including onsite Civil Servants and contractors.
  • Partners in the work, including contractors, universities, and international space agencies.

Question:   What will happen to the traffic (both employees and the public) that use SCS Road?
Answer:  Non-NASA traffic will have a new route around the heart of Goddard‚s activities, ensuring that our neighbors have continued access across our land.

Question:   Where can I view the Master Plan documents?
